… that ‘burning bridges’ comes
from ancient military history. Soldiers actually burnt down the bridge they had
just crossed so they wouldn’t be tempted to turn back in a cowardly way. It
also kept the enemy from following them over the bridge. Julius Caesar was
known to burn bridges to toughen up his troops.
Today it means to make a decision
you can’t change, to permanently and unpleasantly end a relationship.
